Kimono, temples and archery!

The annual archery tournament at Sanjusangen-do temple in Kyoto was held last Sunday, and since I was going hiking in the Higashiyama area anyway, I decided to brave the crowds and take a look for myself.  Although I've used the modern recurve bow as well as the traditional English longbow, I’ve never seen traditional Japanese archery before.

As luck might have it, I was just in time for the women’s archery.   I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that nowhere in the world could you hope to find a more colourful gathering of archers!
