While flicking through the channels on the
TV the other day, I was surprised to find a program on KBS (Kyoto’s TV broadcaster)
featuring a fellow Brit working here called Philip Harper.
Mr. Harper is a master brewer of nihonshu
(or “sake” as it’s generally known in English) at a brewery in Tango, Kyoto Prefecture.
Apparently, he is the first foreign
national ever to have achieved the rank of master brewer (toji), and has made it his mission to popularize nihonshu both at home and overseas.
I have to admit that, when it comes to traditional Japanese
alcohol, I’m more of an awamori/shochu fan myself. Still, I may have to find an excuse to go up
and visit this brewery sometime in the near future…
